Careers in Criminal Justice

There are countless career possibilities for criminal justice degree holders. Jobs in criminal justice can be found in all levels of government (local, state, and federal), the private sector, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations. Many fields of law and justice are evolving to include specialization in areas of technology and computer security, as well as exploring new approaches, such as restorative justice.

In recent years, there has been increased demand for security personnel in the private sector. In addition, due to the heightened threat of terrorism, the federal government has restructured its national and international security practices, leading to the creation of many new jobs and governmental divisions. (Tidewater) In fact, some vocational schools and colleges now offer degree specializations in Homeland Security, instructing students on how to handle emergencies like natural disasters, pandemics, and terrorist attacks. It would be impossible to list all of the career paths made possible by a bachelor's degree or associate's degree in criminal justice. To give you an idea: law enforcement officers, probation officers, institutional counselors, parole officers, investigators, victim/witness advocates, asset protection professionals, and rehabilitation counselors are all occupations open to criminal justice degree holders. In addition, criminal justice studies can be the first step towards a career in public law, whether as a legal assistant or eventually (with further training) as an attorney or judge. (BSU)
